Ceramic disc capacitors08 Dec 2007 16:36 GMT2
I've recently had a few cases of ceramic discs - usually 0.1µF used for HF
smoothing - failing short circuit. They've been generic wax covered beige
coloured types. Any better replacement  - or particular make to go for?
CD-player erratic with CD-Rs08 Dec 2007 16:27 GMT6
This unit, TEAC PD-D850, is having difficulties playing audio CD-Rs. Not
every CD-R has
problems, only some of them and the problem consists in not locking into the
tracks. The strange thing is that the CD-Rs are all of the same brand, same
Speaker impedance  qusetion08 Dec 2007 15:22 GMT8
My shortwave radio receiver's speaker is dead (Hallicrafters Model
S-38). I can't find an exact physical match to it in the original 16 ohm
impedance but can match it with a 8 ohm one that has the same mounting
pattern.

Montgomery Ward model GEN 12394 14" color TV with intermittent tuner08 Dec 2007 07:18 GMT1
I have a Montgomery Ward model GEN 12394 14" color TV made during
August 1983. Recently, it intermittently fails to stay tuned to the
selected cable channel. During this intermittence, it appears to
switch to either channel 2 or 3 regardless of the selected channel,
Sony Trinitron CPD-100ES08 Dec 2007 04:04 GMT17
I have a monitor here, I've had it for probably about 4 years now.
Great monitor, perfect color, just the right sharpness, everything is
fine except the brightness.
It's been like this for quite some time, and until now, it's been
Plasma glow question08 Dec 2007 03:53 GMT8
We just got a new Plasma TV last night. We had the TV on for about 5
hrs and then turned off and went to bed. There was a strange glow on
it. I thought it was just the electrons going down the energy levels
and emitting some phospherescence or sthng???
Slightly OT ...08 Dec 2007 03:22 GMT33
We see a lot of stuff on here from time to time, about crappy Chinese goods.
Well, a couple of days ago, my usual office supplier sent me one of their
regular e-mail fliers, on which was a high-back padded leather swivel chair
with gas lift, castors, arms, rocker action and so on ...

Philips monitor: fades out and zooms07 Dec 2007 22:05 GMT3
I bought a used Philips 109B.
When it is cold, after few seconds it zooms in and fades out, and the screen
is black.
What could it be? A condenser?
Color bleeding on 19" Toshiba TV07 Dec 2007 21:28 GMT11
I have a transistorized Toshiba 19" color TV that I purchased in 1984.
It has worked quite well over the years, but recently has been
exhibiting a symptom which I would describe as a horizontal "bleeding"
of color under certain conditions.
Bob Parker ESR Meter being discontinued at DSE?07 Dec 2007 19:22 GMT1
At AU$24.50 including GST, it looks like a closeout price.
Unfortunately for most of the world, you have to purchase it from
existing stock at one of a very small number of  Dick Smith
Electronics stores in Australia.
Sony 53" TV.07 Dec 2007 12:11 GMT1
Got a call on this Sony rear projection TV Model # KP-53XBR25. Most
times, it's fine, but 20%
of the time, the unit has lack of horizontal width, on both sides.
About two inches on each side
