Or something like that.  Bear with me, I'm a software kinda guy.
I've got eight valves I would like to put under computer control.  
These valves are 12 volt DC latching (pulse).  Or so they say on their
labels.  I do know that there is a black wire and a red wire comming

After living in the same place in New York City for years,
I recently moved to another place (also in New York City).
The room I moved to has an existing phone jack but it looks different
from the old square-ish ones I'm accustomed to.

I've just acquired an older 1.4 kVa BEST Micro Ferrups UPS, the one
with the huge and heavy ferro-resonant transformer.
I changed the battery, plugged it in, and it works great.  Runtime is
excellent for home use.  Just one thing though:  It hums and buzzes
