Question about refrigerative A/C causing lights to dim momentarily06 Feb 2008 20:00 GMT9
I recently purchased a refrigerative A/C unit and notice the lights
dim for a moment each time the compressor kicks in.
I presume this is normal due to a huge startup current requirement.
A thought springs to mind: how is it that this device is affecting

cost of measuring picoamps06 Feb 2008 05:51 GMT22
I'm looking at a book by Gilardini on slow (on the order of 0.1 eV)
electrons in gases. He mentions that the dc currents one has to measure
in such a situation are on the order of between 10^-11 and 10^-13 amps.
I'm just wondering how much it costs to be able to measure such small

I need advise on the following:
The device I am making will use this FET as an output. The device will
operate in the range 12 - 24 volts, depending on the users requirement to
illuminate a few light bulbs.

10 years and $95M later it finally got scrapped.
I've worked on my fair share of cancelled projects over the years, but
this one's a doozy. Cashless ticketing ain't rocket science.

Would gold conductivity electrodes be as good as carbon, platinum black etc?04 Feb 2008 11:47 GMT5
Hi,  I want to make a conductivity meter (for salty water) that has to last
a long time.
I see a lot of electrodes made out of 'platinum black', carbon or even
titanium.
Amp ratings of power adapters04 Feb 2008 11:24 GMT9
Hugely fundamentally ignorant question.
If I have an electronics device that claims to take a power adapter of 12V
200mA, and I plug in one rated at 12V 800mA, will the device merely draw the
proper 200mA (because the voltages are matched)?
Best way to reduce/convert 14 vdc to 6 vdc04 Feb 2008 11:01 GMT5
Many years ago I adapted a 9.6 volt Makita rechargeable battery to power a
portable radio (of approximately the same voltage). It's still going strong but
now I want to do the same thing to a new 6 volt radio using a Dewalt 14 volt
battery.
What size diode?04 Feb 2008 10:46 GMT3
I've got a pedal powered generator using an old PM DC motor from a
treadmill. To charge my deep cycle battery, I'll need a diode to prevent the
motor from spinning me backwards. How do I calculate the size that I need?
The battery is 12V, and I'll rarely produce more than 120W of ...
ABC Logo in Jeopardy?04 Feb 2008 08:01 GMT22
Hi to all,
the famous ABC logo is ( the lissajous pattern ) is to be replaced with a
new and very boring one that just says "ABC1"  -  a slavish imitation of the
British BBC.
Need a laugh ?04 Feb 2008 03:21 GMT13
**  Hi to all my good mates,
Picked up a 2 pack of 150 watt, 240 volt halogen tubes  ( 78mm long ) from
Woollies at Ashfield yesterday  -   Mirabella brand.
They fit in a small flood lamp that lights up my metal work bench.
