CRT monitor acting like an LCD !?21 Jan 2006 09:45 GMT14
I have a 21" Dell CRT monitor.  About a third of the way from the top
of the screen there is a horizontal line - just like you see when an
entire line of pixels fails on an LCD monitor.  It's only very faint
at the moment.  The line is dead still (doesn't roll with the refresh

Connect a home thermostat to a small electric heater?20 Jan 2006 20:04 GMT8
Sorry for the cross post, I think this may be the correct group to post
this.  Would it be possible to connect a home thermostat to a small
portable electric heater?  I am trying to control the temp in another
project inside an insulated box, and was trying to get more precise ...

Can I use different types of thermocouple probes with my meter?19 Jan 2006 20:17 GMT2
I picked up a cheap T-type thermocouple meter with a bad  probe.  Will
a J-type probe work with the T-type meter (w/same plug)?  I wasn't
sure if the meter was calibrated to a certain type of probe.  The
meter is a Digi-Sense model 91100-20, if that helps.  Seems like eBay
MP3 Players - Know nothing19 Jan 2006 10:09 GMT6
I am looking at getting an mp3 player, but with so many on the market it
is hard to know where to start.  Have heard that the 5gb iriver is a
good buy, but is it any better than the ipod nano or creative zen 6gb,
which all seem to be around the same price.  Am a complete novice ...
Where to buy Sanyo NiMH AA batteries in Sydney?19 Jan 2006 10:04 GMT14
I need to stock up on Sanyo NiMH rechargeable batteries. Anyone knows
where to buy in Sydney? I've browsed electronics stores and digital
camera retailers, to no avail.
They're dirt cheap on ebay, but I'd prefer to buy them over the counter
Oscilloscope18 Jan 2006 22:57 GMT3
Someone gave me an old, and by the looks, well used Tektronix 475A
oscilloscope. No manual, or leads/probes. Seems to work. Turns on and the
dot-line traces across the screen. Where might I find leads for it? Do these
tend to be generic or highly proprietary/specialized?

So my 3 year old powerbook battery finally crapped out on my over the
weekend.  I opened up the battery case and found that it has 8

research and found that this battery is out of production.  So i was

Input impedance of Dick Smith Q-1420 multimeter (cheap)17 Jan 2006 09:24 GMT7
Silly question, probably.  I have a cheap DSE multimeter, model Q-1420.
Documentation's long gone, but I wanted to know its input impedance when
measuring DCV.  I'm setting the idle current on an amplifier and the
service manual specifies a VTVM (tube voltmeter) to make the ...
Fire safety question17 Jan 2006 04:18 GMT12
I need some information about the current approach to safety of new
equipment with regard to fire hazards created by a fault. I appreciate
there are generic standards covering the ejection of molten metal and
so on, but I am wondering about the application of the "single

Identify a white LED using only 1.5 volts17 Jan 2006 01:33 GMT5
Looking for a source for ultra bright LED found in single cell flashlights
now being sold everywhere.
Catalogs all show at least 1.7 volts needed. A single 1.5 volt alkaline cell
can not light the regular LEDs I have.
