I'm planning on going to Purdue University. For a while now, I've been going back and forth between EE and CmpE. From what I can tell, Purdue's requirements are pretty close for both, but CmpE seems to throw more software stuff at the student instead of hardcore

A 555 circuit running from battery power needs to be turned on and off. A switch for this purpose cannot be added due to lack of space. The "on" signal will be from an existing momentary pb switch (this switch controls an LED) which can also provide battery voltage (7.2v).

I have some 2 core SY type cable. Is it permissible to use the wire braid as an earth conductor, as in SWA type, or must 3 core with green/yellow core be used to carry mains supplies?
