Anyone ever replace the LCD display on such a radio (subject)? I would think
it would be easy if one knew the replacement part. C. Crane will do it for
$25 if I send it in. I don't really want to be without the radio for long,
but maybe it's the easiest way.

Hi, Mr. Watson. Most of them are trivially easy the second time. It's
the first time that you ride the learning curve.
You might want to call their service department and ask. Also, you
might want to try sci.electronics.repair. Possibly someone there has
done it -- I haven't.
Good luck

As someone said, sci.electronics.repair is the proper newsgroup.
But $25 doesn't seem like all that much to do it. I've never seen
the radio up close, but it seems like a lot of LCD displays are not
generic, they have something unique to the radio. And if that's the
case here, then getting the part will not be easy for a single individual.
You'll have to get it directly from the manufacturer. And they may
not want to deal in single quantities.
Since it is a C. Crane radio, ask them if they'll sell you the part without
doing the repair. If they say no, then you may have little choice but
to pay them the money (which again does not seem unreasonable).
Take note that it might be something far simpler. If there's a bad
connection, that would make the display flaky too.

Ask on news:rec.radio.shortwave about it. There are some radios with
a fairly high failure rate on their LCD displays.

Seems a good deal - I assume there is some warranty that way.

Go ahead and send it in. You can play with your telescope until it
comes back. :-)

Actually, the LCD failed about 5 months ago. I'm finally getting around to
the LCD. It's possibly my telescope that has kept me from dealing with the
LCD. :-)
Thanks for the responses above. I've been overwhelmed of late with other
matters, so am just getting back to this. Yes, sci.electronics. Somehow I
missed that. My NG list is not easy to order properly.

Back again. This is still a back burner issue with me. I meant
sci.electronics.repair above. Surprisingly, I posted there but got zero
responses. I think I'll just be sending the whole device back. [Of course,
I'll probably open it up and see see what's really inside :-) Curiosity, of
course. ]

W.,
Look to see if the display just lays into a socket or on some contacts.
If it does, take it out & clean the contacts with a clean eraser and
reassemble. I had a Fluke 79II multimeter that did this & after the
cleaning, the contrast returned to good as or better than new.
